Go To Church

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. – Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

Immense grief came when I lost my dad, an uncle, and my older brother to cancer over a span of 10 weeks in 2024. I had taken my dad to his medical appointments and stayed with him in the intensive care unit. I had visited my brother in the hospital and during his hospice care. I had prayed earnestly for all three of them and offered spiritual support to the rest of my family.

By the end of the third funeral, I was drained in every way. The sorrow that filled my heart made it hard to think clearly. My body suffered from pushing myself beyond my limits for months. I struggled with wanting to have my loved ones here on earth though God had called them to a much better home in heaven.

What’s more, I was miles aways from my home, my husband, and my church. Hurricane Beryl was heading for the coast of Texas. So, I decided to stay near my family a while longer.

I didn’t know what would help me at the time, but my heavenly Father did. When I cried out in my distress one day, God responded, “Go to Church.” He knew I needed the support of the body of Christ.

The next Sunday, I attended a service at a local church I had visited a few times before. As I sat listening to the pastor’s encouraging message, the tears I’d held back finally fell. A comforting hand reached out to me. Peace and love surrounded me.

God provided a sanctuary right where I was. In this place, I could grieve, heal, and be restored. I received the compassion, help, and hospitality of the Church as a healing balm for my heart.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the tangible refuge Your Church is for those of us who are hurting, grieving, and sick—no matter where we are. May more come to experience Your love and healing.
